I’m heading off to work soon but I wanted to pose a question to everyone. With Johan Santana’s departure from the division, that makes C.C. Sabathia the top pitcher in the American League Central. After thinking about it, does that make Justin Verlander the second best pitcher in the division? He’s had two solid seasons but this is probably the only division where he’d rate so high, at least as far as being a consensus number two.
He’d be top five, but you wonder if he’d be arguably the third best starter on the Tigers team, much less the division.
--I think Carmona has to be in the conversation and believe it or not Gil Meche.
--I think you have to say Verlander is the Tigers top starter. Sure Rogers and Bonderman are good but Bondo has something to prove this year and Rogers is more of a staff leader in terms of knowledge. As for other pitchers in the Central yes you have to put Burhle in the conversation but I think Verlander beats him out. The only other guy is Carmona. He was slightly better probably than Verlander last year but those two would be 2a and 2b although they both could jump past CC this year or next.
--I’d say Verlander is #2 in the division. I assume the question is in regards to who will be the top pitchers in the division for the 2008 season. With that in mind, Buerhle is out regardless of what sort of career he’s had up to this point, unless you really think he’s going to be better than JV this season. Carmona is up there too, but I’d expect Verlander to be better this year. In fact, it’s not impossible that he could have a better season than Sabathia too.

Wouldn’t Buehrle be in the conversation? I’d rather have Verlander, but if you’re talking career accomplishment…
