Placido Polanco Picks Up Four More Hits In Tigers Win Over Orioles

The Tigers made it three straight wins with a 5-4 win tonight over the Orioles.  Chad Durbin threw 95 pitches in just 3 2/3 innings and while he gave up only two runs, he didn’t go very deep in the game.  Bobby Seay took over from there and while he was credited with the tying run in the seventh (Joel Zumaya actually allowed the inherited runner to score), he got it done in those middle innings.  Joel Zumaya struck out four in two innings and then Todd Jones finished it up with a shutout ninth.

Placido Polanco put the Tigers on the board in the fifth with an RBI single and then Craig Monroe came up huge with a two run shot that gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead.  The Orioles tied it in the seventh and then Sean Casey and Placido Polanco had RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth to put the Tigers ahead for good.

Polanco finished four for five and he’s now hitting .376.  Magglio Ordonez didn’t drive in a run but Sean Casey stole his first base since 2005 back when he was with the Reds.

Nate Robertson gets the start tomorrow as the Tigers try to finish up the sweep.  The hitters will try to get it done against Steve Trachsel tomorrow afternoon’s get away day afternoon game.

I was at the game last night a very exciting finish. Was disappointed to see that Perez was starting a SS.. Durbin was terrible, all over the place, I think he finished with more balls than strikes, we got lucky a couple of time like when the O’s loaded the bases with 1 out and didn’t score.

Seay pitched great for 2 & 1/3 but I think Leyland got greedy sending him back out for the 7th when he let 2 runners on. Zumaya comes in and the O’s did a double steal on his first pitch. Then a grounder hit to Perez and he decides to go home (infield was back), in very close call Roberts was out at the plate. Tejada then hit a grounder up the middle to tie the game, wasn’t a very hard hit ball, just one of those that was in the right spot.

Zumaya strikes out the side in the 8th setting the stage for the bottom of the 8th. Thames was scheduled to lead off (he made some nifty plays at first during the game) but Guillen pitch hits for him (was hoping that he would pitch hit for Perez). Guillen walks, then Grandeson is up (who came in as a defensive replacement for Infante in the 7th). The O’s decide to intentionally walk him to get to Perez. I am depressed because I didn’t think Casey was available (thought he had the flu), but in he comes to pitch hit for Perez. He goes the other way for a single down the left field line, plating Guillen. Pudge K’s and then Casey got his stolen base on the back end of a double steal with Granderson getting the throw down to third. PP hit one deep in the hole and Tejada got it but had no play with it, Grandreson scored. The Sheffield, who had previously driven one to the fence in left center only to have it run down by Gibbons, hit a bullet right at him again. I was encouraged by how hard sheffield hit the ball, I am hoping he is close to snapping out of his funk.
Roller Coaster came in and promptly gave up a single and then got Mora. Markakis double deep in left, leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd. Tejada grounded to Inge, who tried to tag the runner from second, but missed him. He fired to Casey for the out and the runner on third scored. 2 outs tying man on 3rd and Jones got Huff to pop out to end it.

What I took away from the game:
1. We stole one for the O’s as they could not capatialize on Durbin early.
2. Thames played a very nice first
3. While it didn’t show in the box score Sheffield hit the ball hard a couple of times
4. Durbin needs to be removed from the rotation
5. Neifi Perez still sucks
6. Comerica robbed Pudge of a homer, hit a shot to the top of the wall in center, he ended up with a double
